What is National Cookie Day?
As of the time being, a lot of cookies have been specially made and invented in different places all over the world. May it be chocolate chip cookies, girl scout cookies, gingerbread cookies, fortune cookies, butter cookies, and vegan cookies among others. To commemorate these different specialties, December 4 has been assigned as a special day to celebrate National Cookie Day in order to pay tribute to these delicious little treats.
The Origin of the Cookie
The English word “cookie” is derived from the Dutch word “koekie” which means a “little cake.” Hard wafers have been invented before, however, these were usually not sweet enough to be considered as cookies.
The origin of the cookie began in Persia back in the 7th century, soon after the use of sugar became popular in their region. They were then passed on to Europe through the Muslim conquest of Spain. Cookies became common at all levels of society from the royale cuisine to the street vendors in Europe as it reached the 14th century.
Cookies arrived in America by the 17th century, since then, macaroons and gingerbread cookies were among the popular early American cookies. In most countries outside of North America, the most common word for a cookie is “biscuit” and in some places, both cookies and biscuits are used.
In the year 1976, Sesame Street included National Cookie Day on their own calendar for the first time on November 26. A muppet from Sesame Street named Cookie Monster also proclaimed his own National Cookie Day in the 1980 book called The Sesame Street Dictionary. But then, in 1987, Matt Nader of the Blue Chip Cookie Company in San Francisco made National Cookie Day on December 4.
