What is National Croissant Day?

In the United States, National Croissant Day is celebrated every year on January 30th. Croissants are buttery bread rolls that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

The key to making a perfect croissant is through laminating the dough. Laminating the dough is a process by which butter is folded into the dough which creates multiple layers of butter and the bread base. And once it is baked, it is a mouth-watering flaky crust and airy body. What is known, is that crescent-shaped bread has been found around the world for so long now. One of these was the Kipferl, the original name for the croissant, which originated in Austria as far back as the 13th century.

Credits to an Austrian military officer, August Zang, for introducing us to the croissant we know today. He opened a Viennese bakery located in Paris, France in the year 1939 introducing France to Viennese baking techniques.

How to Celebrate National Croissant Day?

In many different parts of the world, bakeries create croissants with chocolate, fruits, meat, vegetables, and cheese, and they also use croissants to make sandwiches. Some popular sandwiches include egg salad sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, and cheese and ham sandwiches.

And to celebrate, you can have croissants for all your meals. You can start with a plain breakfast croissant, a croissant sandwich for lunch, and end the day with chocolate or custard-filled croissant. You can also try making croissants from scratch at home. Don't forget to share your homemade croissants with friends, family, and co-workers.

  • Saccotino, a wonderfully soft sweet roll filled with a chocolate-based custard or chocolate sprinkles mixed in its dough.
  • Maritozzi are sweet buns that can be topped and filled with cream, these are the same as for hot cross buns which are popular in England.
  • Treccia, it’s made with the same dough as cornetti but is, as the name suggests, shaped like a braided hair.
