What is World Thinking Day?

In the year 1926, Girl Guide and Girl Scout delegates from around the globe met in the USA for the 4th World Conference and among other decisions, they agreed that there should be a special annual day when Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world would come together and express their gratefulness and appreciation for this international Movement. The delegates chose February 22 as the date for World Thinking Day because it was the birth of both Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout Movement, and Olave Baden-Powell, who was World Chief Guide.

World Thinking Day is a day of international friendship and it is said to be the opportunity to speak out on issues that affect young women and fundraise for 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in different countries around the world. A tradition since 1932, the World Thinking Day Fund collects pennies and coins from its members all around the world, to support their fellow Guides and Scouts.

How to celebrate World Thinking Day?

On the 22nd of February, rangers from Mona Burgin's Unit in Auckland, New Zealand set off before dawn, while it is still dark, and they climb to the top of Maungawhau / Mount Eden. They set up their little campfire and a flag-staff, and as the sun rises over the sea they raise the Guide World Flag and sing the World Song. They speak of some of the people and the countries they are thinking about - and so they start "The Big Think" which then travels all the way around the world.

Some World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts member organizations use it as an opportunity to do projects along with other twin organizations, one tradition is that every Scout or Guide, ex-Scout or ex-Guide, places a candle in their window that night at dusk:- "This is my little Guiding Light, I'm going to let it shine."

It has also become a tradition to send letters or postcards to other Scout and Guides before World Thinking Day. They have also declared numerous themes throughout the years just like in 2010-2015, the UN Millennium Development Goals, "Connect" in 2016, "Grow" in 2017, "Impact" in 2018, and “Leadership” for this year.
